Words have just as much power to destroy as any fist. Fits of rage that proclaim hate, call out ugly names and curse words, belittle others, and assert dominance destroy the speaker as well as the recipient. If you indulge in this behavior or receive it from someone, you can stop it.

This behavior is of darkness and it destroys people’s spirit and dampens their potential.

You may feel powerless to stop it, but you are not. When asked, God will bring all manner of assistance and forces to bear on helping you. If you are the one who rages, pray for self-control and the ability to see the damage you do to yourself and others fully. If you receive rage from someone, pray for help in setting boundaries and learning to love yourself enough and the other person to work toward an end to this behavior.

Ephesians 4: 23 speaks of being made new in the attitude of your mind. Changing your mind and therefore behaviors is possible with Christ’s help. It may be very hard, but it begins with awareness of a need to change and then an attitude of willingness.

The next time hateful words are coming out of you or at you stop, literally freeze, take a deep breath, and then pray for God’s guidance. Do not rationalize abusive talk. Correction should be firm, but yelling, name calling, cursing, and intimidation are never okay.
